A deployable scanners give far too large an advantage to the defending team, or the team closest to the supply depot. There's already enough of an edge provided by triage/ammo hives and uplinks. Doing this to the scanner would mean constant scans and no downsides of a) having an equipment slot used up, as you can drop your scanners then switch to a different suit or b) having to use the scanner repeatedly to refresh scan data, which ties up your weapon.
There's also the matter of putting them in places unreachable by anyone but dropship pilots, which under the right circumstances could make them near impossible to destroy. |

What changed was sharing targets on the radar when anyone on the team/squad had them in their field of vision. What this meant was that you were pretty much always on radar, at all times cause SOMEONE would see you. So nobody cared about scanners.
Now that the radar is a little less OP in general, scanners are standing out.
So the folks whining about scanners dont actually feel the radar is OP (as its less OP than it used to be), they just either dont want to be vulnerable while scanning (i miss out on kills due to scanning all the time) or they dont want to lose their former equipment (im guessing nanos with armor rep).
Radar may or may not be OP in this game, but its not new to the scanner. In fact, radar is less OP now than it ever was and the intended role of low radius suits now actually have a point since you can get under most scanners and arent on everyones radar because one person happened to spot you across the map.
Finally, someone who gets it. Big plus one for you.
The current iteration of scanners has made stealth gameplay and scouts possible. If you don't show up on scans, no one can see you unless they have direct LOS on you. If you are seen by one, you are NOT seen by all. This is a huge advantage, one that was not possible pre-1.4.
With regard to equipment changes, what people don't realize is that if you can use it, you can abuse it. Intelligent players will ALWAYS find a way to use in game mechanics to their advantage. It might take coordination and skill, but in the right hands it can and will be overpowered.
In the above case, everyone in my squad would deploy scanners in the central area to cover every direction. Doesn't matter if you have to have it on your suit to prevent self-destruct because everything else could be deployed separately using the supply depot. Scanners would still cover every angle and logis would still have two equipment slots to play with, just as they do with the present scanners. Only now, you have the advantage of not needing to pull it out to use it, so assaults or other suits can focus on killing instead of scanning. |
